The Art of Inner Knowing

Inner knowing – listening to your inner voice, a feeling in the body, perhaps even a vision? How to you experience that sense of intuition?

It is true, I’ve found, that when we slow down and listen to our intuition, the answers to life’s little problems can be found more readily. Conversely, when we ignore those inner voices (feelings or visual signs) I’ve found, the results of allowing the logical mind to make decisions can be less than optimal; I can refer my pre-wedding vibes to that one, but that’s a different story!

How the intuition is experienced can differ from person to person. For many there’s a little voice in the head that delivers the solution. For others a deep feeling that tells you it’s OK or not OK. For some, a vision arising in meditation or a dream may direct the conscious mind. No matter how the message arrives, how may we allow ourselves to pay attention to our own sense of inner knowing?

Step One

The first step would be to accept the possibility that a such a sense exists. Perhaps accepting that the unconscious mind has the power to direct our conscious thoughts? Maybe this only comes with experience – maybe the feelings have to be so overpowering that they can no longer be ignored?

Step Two

The second step would be allowing that inner message to have more scope to express itself. In other words, allowing time and space for the body and mind to register. Through slowing down, meditation, yoga or mindfulness for example?

In Dru yoga we allow the movements we make to flow with the breath – to become a meditation in movement. Relaxing the breath, moving in time – allows the mind to find a meditative groove and here, the magic may happen.

Mindfulness takes the attention to the here and now. Perhaps a walk in nature where the mind and body can become absorbed in the beauty all around. Like magic, the unconscious mind may find a more powerful space to express itself.

Meditation takes the attention to a still point within. Inner focus. Where no conscious thoughts arise. Here the unconscious mind may, like magic, find space to resolve and indicate its message.

Step Three

And finally. Trust. Learn to trust yourself. Learn to trust that inner knowing and life will flow better.
