Once in a Blue Moon

Once in a Blue Moon

This week we have a Blue Moon – and a Supermoon at that! What does it even mean – and how can we best access the power of yoga at this time.

Blue Moon

A Blue Moon is the second full moon of a month. With a ‘moon cycle’ – or the amount of time it takes from one full moon to the next one – at 29.5 days, the chances of 2 full moons in one calendar month is, indeed, quite rare. Other than the rarity of such an event, there’s nothing particularly special about the actual full moon. It won’t turn blue!

Supermoon

A Supermoon means that the moon is closer to the Earth in its rotation – with a slightly off-centre elliptical orbit there are points at which the moon is closer (perigee moon – also known as the supermoon), and points when the moon is further away (apogee moon). There is a difference in size of about 14%, so whether of knot you would actually perceive the moon in the sky as noticeably bigger or smaller is debatable.

Non-the-less, much is made of the influence of the ‘supermoon’; the effect of the moon said to enhanced at this time. Higher and lower tides – as well as the emotional pull on our beings, if you happen to be sensitive to moon cycles.

Moon Rise

The August Blue Supermoon officially falls on Wednesday 30th – and here in the North East it will appear in the night sky at 20:23 – and at 98.0% visibility will appear big and bright in the early night sky. On Thursday 31st the moon rise will be at 20:33 at 99.9% visibility. Perhaps take your pick of the best chance of clear skies to view the moon. As we approach darker nights and earlier night falls expect more viewing of the moon; make the most of clear skies and enjoy the show.

Moon Sequence

In Dru Yoga we have the wonderful Moon Sequence. Accessible to all the Moon Sequence engages that wonderful, cooling feminine energy of the moon, allowing us to appreciate a sense of stillness and connection with our bodies and the natural world. Just as beautiful outdoors as indoors, as in any of our Dru Yoga sequences we can adapt to the environment we find ourselves in. Yoga is connection – blending with and embracing, not fighting or ‘making do’.
