Best version of you

Best version of you

It’s interesting, isn’t it, that everyone you meet (and many of those you don’t meet!) hold in their head a different version of you.

Each situation, each stage of your life, brings out a slightly different aspect. Are you the same at home, with your parents, with your children? How many different versions of you exist – and which of them is closest to the real, authentic you. And what has this to do with yoga?

The game of Life

We start out in life as a bundle of joy, full of love and wonder. Enthusiasm, optimism – endless possibilities. As we traverse the challenges of family life, education, expectation, responsibilities, exams, work – the list goes on – we cover that authentic joyful self so that we ‘fit in’. We learn to play the roles more adeptly. Professional life, becoming a parent, a lover, a carer, a friend – more layers of the self with the aim of survival and achievement.

As a parent of 4 with almost 16 years between the oldest and the youngest, it would be fair to say that I’ve been a different parent to each of them. Is that fair? Or just the way it is. We hope to offer our children the best version of ourselves so that they can flourish – perhaps all we can hope for is the best version of us that exists at that time?

The tipping point

As time goes on, perhaps, we reach a tipping point – the realization that we have lost our true self. That self inside that has been buried by the years of compromise and adaption we went through to survive life’s challenges. The option to carry on and conclude that we must spend the remainder of our days bearing the weight of life’s challenges – or to spend some time peeling back the layers and uncovering that diamond inside.

Dru Yoga and Meditation

Yoga and meditation is one tool for making that journey. In Dru Yoga we unblock the layers of adaption – those ongoing ‘pain in the neck’ and ‘creaky hips’ – emotional baggage sitting in the physical? In meditation we ease the attention inwards and sit with the quiet mind.
