Yoga and Menopause

Yoga is simply to connect. At all stages of life. Menopause – that time in a woman’s life when the body is changing – is a perfect opportunity to bring yoga into your life.

As we go through our child-bearing years we are subject to the changing levels of hormones in our body. Those hormonal fluctuations often are accompanied by mood changes and changes in the female body: water retention, energy and sleep patterns, for example.

Solutions

At the time around the menopause – and often for years around the time when the monthly cycle is no longer part of our life – the hormones cursing around our body can cause a whole range of symptoms. For some the answer is to move to a pharmaceutical solution. For others, a more natural approach is sought. For others, perhaps a combination.

No matter what your stance on use of medication or otherwise, this is a time of great change – physical and psychological. So, what is the role of yoga at this time?

The role of yoga in menopause

Yoga puts you in control of your body. Some of the Dru Yogas sequences are there to raise the heart rate and raise energy: the sun sequence, for example, can do this. In effect these sequences give the excess energy and heat that sometimes accompany menopause somewhere to go – in a similar way to other forms of physical exercise might do.

Other Dru sequences and asanas (postures) have a more cooling effect, others pay homage to the cyclical nature of the seasons, the month and our life. Yet others are specifically directed to the element of water – when we go with the flow, as it were, life runs better:  or to hormonal balance within the female body – remember, you have control!

A Woman of Wisdom

Yoga is to connect. To the body, to the breath, the emotions and the mind. To yoga is to bring acceptance to the way things are right now. And as menopause brings change, an acceptance of those changes brings a sense of peace. And in that peace, you find yet another turn of life’s cycle brings a different perspective – maybe even wisdom.
