Yoga in a Crisis

YOGA IN A CRISIS

Yoga is the perfect way to take your mind away from external worries and bring you back into your body. Dru Yoga can sometimes be described as a mediation in movement – and what better way to move your body and take your mind to a better, safer place?

FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN

In a crisis we often slide into a feeling of fear – fear of the unknown, fear of what might happen. Sometimes the fear is real and needs immediate action, other times the fear is purely in our heads – it is easy for the head to go crazy and spiral into the worst-case scenario.

Last summer I was faced with a situation that sent me off into such a negative spiral. Fear and uncertainty took hold and a lay awake with my mind racing into the rabbit hole. Heart racing for no reason other than these imagined outcomes, a feeling I haven’t experienced since my stressful days in dentistry.

WORST CASE SCENARIO

I get it – sometimes even though you know the fear and worry isn’t real, you know that you should be doing more grounding and focusing on the reality of your breath – it’s just a bit too hard to get out of your head and back into your body. Out of the worst case imagined future and into the present.

FLIPPING THE SWITCH

So what flipped the switch for me?

Actually it was a conversation with my financial adviser, who said simply ‘there are things that are in your control and things that are not in your control. Focus on the things that are in your control and leave the others to themselves.’

YOGA IN A CRISIS

Gradually back to focusing on the yoga – that connection between the breath which brings life and your body, that wonderful place to live this life.

In times of crisis sometimes yoga may not be the whole answer, but when you’re ready it will be waiting for you.
