How Dru yoga develops confidence

Confidence can be a fleeting quality. That feeling of knowing all is well and you are in a situation where you feel comfortable and in control. That feeling of ‘I’ve got this’.

When you are feeling confident you feel able to tackle the world. When you don’t perhaps you feel like you simply want to hide in a dark room.

Mind:body connection

The mind:body connection is a curious thing, and perhaps we could consider where that feeling of confidence – or lack there-of – could arise. In exploring that then from there we could perhaps explore how we can use Dru yoga to strengthen our mind:body connection and reach inside and turn on that feeling of confidence.

The mind and body are in constant communication with each other via a huge network of nerves – some of which take messages from the body to the brain, and others taking messages from the brain to the body. Did you know that on this communications highway the information flow is 80% from the body to the brain and only 20% from the brain to the body? – When you consider that many of those signals from the brain control automatic functions such as breathing, heart rate and so on; isn’t it interesting to know how much information the brain receives from the body – and perhaps to consider how the brain uses that information to calculate what signals it sends out.

A positive mindset

We are often given the idea that we can change our state using the power of a positive mindset. But given the information above perhaps a better place to start would be to look at the body. Of course a positive ‘can do’ mindset is key – if you can you will – and if you can’t you won’t: simple as that.

How Dru yoga develops confidence

Dru yoga works on all levels of the human experience – from the physical through mindset and thought patterns all the way through to that state of bliss we encounter in meditation. So how can Dru yoga affect and develop confidence?

At the physical level Dru relaxes the body – we ‘go with the flow’ as the body moves through positions and there is a focus on good posture and a relaxed from – opening the chest and standing tall. Good posture and relaxed movement sends a signal the brain that all is well – thus increasing that sense of wellbeing and confidence in the body and the space around us.

In Dru yoga we focus on breathing – adding breathwork to the movement as well as using the breath patterns to enhance relaxation. Awareness and breath focus is key to body confidence and this message of peace and energy flow gets transmitted to the brain.

One of the special features in Dru is the positive mindset running through the classes. You will hear a Dru yoga teacher often adding positive affirmations relevant to the flow of the class.

Combining the physical movement with the breath and affirmations has a profound impact on the messages transmitted to the brain. Have faith – all is well. A Dru Yoga class will leave you feeling relaxed with the mind:body connection reinforced and ready for anything. Confidence? You’ve got this.
