Yoga and Pilates – what’s the difference?
To the observer – and often the participant – there seems to be not much difference between these two disciplines. So much so that often you will see classes offered as a hybrid ‘yogalates’ type class.
To be fair there there are lot of similarities between In both styles: there are a number of moves and postures which look remarkable similar – ever the same. In both yoga and Pilates you will find a large number of body weight exercises and be offered instructions regarding breathing whilst you perform the exercises..
Pilates
Pilates is a system of bodywork exercises using (traditionally) body weight with the aim of strengthening the body whilst aligning the spine. There is often a particular emphasis on strengthening the core.
Instructions will generally be very body-orientated: by this I mean the teacher will usually be focusing on the physical aspect of the class, with the breath work brought in to offer more support for the body during the movements.
Yoga
Yoga, on the other hand, means literally to unite – the body and mind. Traditionally the purpose of the physical movements and postures is to prepare the body and mind for long periods in meditation. The aim of the yoga class is to move the body whilst focusing simultaneously on the breath and moving the student towards a place of inner peace and relaxation.
Instructions from the yoga teacher will likely include the physical cues along with suggestions that you could focus on how the movements make you feel – and further, how you would like to feel. I often describe yoga as a moving meditation.
A note on hybrids
What’s the point? Other than marketing it’s either one or the other – only my opinion.
Yoga or Pilates – your choice
To be fair, in both yoga and Pilates what is offered will be very teacher-dependant. Such is the beauty of individuality. There will be variations in style; for example power yoga and Dru yoga – both very different; as well as variations in teaching styles withing each yoga style. It is important to be happy with the teacher you are going to spend time with – perhaps trying several styles and teachers as part of your exploration.
