Yoga for Every Body
Yoga is for Every Body – not just those bodies which are young, flexible and able to make themselves into fancy shapes. Yoga is about connection. Yoga is for Every Body.
There are many aspects to a yoga practice. Yoga is not all about the physical – it’s not all about the movements, the postures – nor is yoga just about the breathing. Yoga is a way of life – a way of being – a lifelong journey, if you will.
Yoga and the Physical Body
Many are attracted to a yoga practice for its physical benefits – the stretching, the breathing, the opportunity for deep relaxation and there is nothing wrong with that. The physical benefits of a yoga practice are many – better posture, less back pain, body awareness, better breathing, better sleep, increased range of movement, core strength – to name a few. These benefits are available to Every Body.
More than the Physical
But what if those physical benefits were simply side effects of a yoga practice? What if yoga was not just about the physical practice, what if yoga was simply a lifestyle – a means of living better – calmer, more mindfully, more present. What if the purpose of a physical practice was to prepare the body and mind for stillness – peace of mind, a sense of calm, meditation?
The physical practice of yoga is not about how far you can stretch, tying your ankles around your neck, handstands on the top of a mountain. It is OK of course to have physical aims, but the practice of yoga is not meant to be one of gymnastics. Yoga is for Every Body.
Yoga for Every Body
Yoga means to connect – mind, body, the wider world, your thoughts, emotions, the Universe – and that requires nothing more than the ability to slow down and act mindfully: to move, to breathe, to live with grace. The physical practice of yoga can include any form of mindful movement – flows, holding stretches or simply mindful movement and breathwork. Yoga can be done anywhere – on an aeroplane, in a yoga studio – or even on the tope of a mountain. The point is that yoga is not one form of practice. It is simply a means of connecting. Yoga can indeed be for Every Body.
